Kathleen Kase Burk, American, b. 1950 - d. 2020

Primarily a still life artist, Ms. Burk’s extremely realistic pencil drawings explore the effects of light on arrangements of common objects. In later years, however, her interest in design, particularly grids and centralized geometric designs reminiscent of mid-twentieth century modern art, resulted in a series of large abstract works, some of which are executed in colored pencil.

Artist Statement

The practice of drawing is much like meditation. The stillness of objects and the revealing quality of light encourage contemplation, reflection, and awareness of emotional states.
My arrangements are made up of simple geometric shapes and grid-like patterns, which relate more to modern abstract art than to the traditional type of still life. Design transforms the ordinary and everyday into something elegant and satisfying.
